Can I be absolutely certain that I will go to heaven when I die?
· The Bible teaches that a person can be absolutely certain he will go to heaven when he dies.
· There are five simple truths a person must understand and believe to have this assurance.
#1. The Bible says all men are sinners
■ Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
■ Romans 3:10-12 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
■ Isaiah 64:6 “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
#2. The Bible says the penalty of sin is death.
■ Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
■ Ezekiel 18:20 “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
■ Revelation 20:14 “Death and hell were cast into the lake of fire, this is the second death.
#3. The Bible says our good works or deeds cannot earn our way to heaven or merit favor with God
■ Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,”
■ Ephesians 2:8,9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
■ Romans 4:5“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”
#4. The Bible says Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty of sin that we owe
■ Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
■ Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
■ II Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
#5. The Bible says all we have to do to go to heaven is to believe (trust) in Christ as our Saviour
■ John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
■ John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
Does the Bible say I can know - that I have eternal life?
■ I John 5:10-13 “...he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. ”
