Pastor's Discovery Class #4

Class #4

Now That I Am Saved, why do I still want to sin?

■             When you were saved you were given a new nature. This new nature brought with it new (Godly) desires.

■              However you still have a old (sinful) nature. This nature and it’s sinful desires did not change or go away when you were saved.

■             A Born-Again believer has two natures. A sinful nature and a divine nature. Both strive to control his life.

■             We will learn about how to be controlled by the new nature and live victoriously over the old nature and it’s sinful desires.

Understanding the New Birth

■                        John 3:1-6

■           Vs. 3“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

■           Vs. 4 “Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?”

■           Vs. 5 “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

■            Vs. 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

A Christian has two births

A physical birth■           A birth from an earthly father.

■           A birth to live on earth.

■           A birth that brought temporary life. (subject to death)

■           A spiritual birth

■                A birth from the

Heavenly Father.

■           A birth to live in heaven.

■           A birth that brought

everlasting life.

(not subject to death)

There are two births & two deaths

■           There is a physical & spiritual birth.

■           There is a physical & spiritual death.

■           If you are born once, you will die twice.

■           If you are born twice, you will die only once.

■               What is the physical death? “For as the body

without the spirit is dead,” James 2:26

■           What is the spiritual death? “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” Revelation 20:14

Let’s compare these two natures.

The Old Nature

(the flesh)

■             Cannot inherit the Kingdom of God.…….I Corinthians 15:50

■             Produced by a corruptible

seed.…....I Corinthians 15:50

■             The source of my sinful

desires and actions.…….…...

………….Romans 7:15,17,18

■             Strives to control my life..…...

………………..Galatians 5:17

■           The New Nature

(the divine nature, new man)

■             Does inherit the Kingdom of God..……………..John 3:3

■             Produced by an incorruptible

seed.………….I Peter 1:23

■             The source of my godly

desires and it cannot sin....

…………………..I John 3:9

■             Through which the Holy Spirit strives to control my life.…………Galatians 5:17

What happens when the flesh controls your life?

■          “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21

What happens if the Holy Spirit controls my life?

■          But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22,23

False teachings and misconceptions about the Old Nature.

1.    There is no old nature.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us”                I John 1:8

2.    The old nature goes away when you are saved.

(It will be with you until the day you die)

3.  You can make the old nature better. (It is just as wicked after salvation as it is before salvation)

4.  The old nature can be defeated once and for all. (You may win daily battles, but you have not won the war.)

How to have victory over the old nature.

Starve the old nature■           “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;” Ephesians 4:22

■           Feed the new nature

■           And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:23,24

How do you starve the old nature?

■          Remove that which it feeds upon.

■          Ungodly books & magazines

■          Filthy movies & TV programs

■          Ungodly music

■          Ungodly friends

How do you feed the new nature?

■          The Four Talks:

■             Prayer  (You talking to God)

■             Reading your Bible (God talking to you)

■          Fellowship (Christians talking to Christians)

■          Witnessing (Christians talking to unsaved)
